We support countries and communities as they work to eradicate poverty, implement the Paris Agreement on climate change and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. We advocate for transformative change, and we connect countries to the resources they need to help people build a better life. Rome Centre for Climate Action and Energy TransitionThe central purpose of the Rome Centre is to ensure the effective implementation and further development of the strategic partnership between UNDP and the government of Italy across the objectives of sustainable development and in doing so advancing the broader partnership between UNDP and G7 and G20 countries. The Rome Centre focuses on the critical policy areas of youth engagement in climate action, energy for development and climate finance. These objectives are pursued through the effective implementation of three initial main programmes: the Technical Assistance and Investment Support Facility, the Italy-UNDP Energy Partnership and Youth4Climate.The Technical Assistance and Investment Support Facility aims to mobilise finance for climate, energy and environment. Specifically, the Facility aims to originate projects that contribute to the decarbonization efforts of developing economies and to their transition to climate-resilient economies, and it aims to catalyse international financial resources toward these initiatives. Matching impactful projects with investors and capital providers goes hand in hand with the engagement with financial institutions – both institutional and private – at Italian and global level. The Energy for Growth initiative aims to promote access to sustainable energy in developing countries, contributing to SDG7. The goal of the partnership is to assist partner countries in unlocking finance to scale up the diffusion of clean energy solutions, increase access to energy and boost the energy transition. Overall, the initiative aims to foster the mobilization of public and private capital toward projects aligned with the international policy agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. It does so by connecting UNDP's capacity and connections in emerging economies and developing countries with the public-private ecosystem of Italy and other G7-G20countries, in the crucial sector of energy.Youth4Climate promotes youth engagement in climate action, contributing to SDG13. Youth4Climate supports the implementation of youth-led and youth-inclusive solutions to environmental and climate challenges, both financially and through capacity development. It also gives young people around the world who are committed to fighting climate change a platform to engage with policymakers and global leaders. The Rome Centre also has a broader mandate to engage with the Italian ecosystem as a whole, which involves close collaboration with key actors in the public and private sector, with the aim to effectively mobilize financial resources for development objectives. To guarantee the effective implementation of the Rome Centre's workplan, and indeed to ensure the strategic and long term impact of both its programmes, the Centre will develop broader strategic partnerships and reinforce the overall collaboration with Italy and other meaningful partners.Delivering on its programmes, the Rome Centre will provide support to the international cooperation efforts of Italy and it will support UNDP's global policy initiatives. Recognizing that change will be disruptive, UNDP will work to ensure that such transitions are just, and that their impact on vulnerable people is understood and duly mitigated.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Institutional ArrangementsThe intern will report to the thematic team leaders and operations lead and will work closely with technical experts.Interns' ExpensesInterns may be given a stipend under conditions prescribed in the section on stipends, below. All selected candidates will, therefore, undergo rigorous reference and background checks. The UNDP's Country Programme Document (2024 – 2028) considers Good Governance as the core to ensuring poverty reduction and sustainable development. It looks at Governance as having a maximum multiplier effect on achieving the SDGs and a leverage point for development. Governance has also been one of the strategic pillars in the development agenda of Malawi's government. The national development strategy considers governance to be the "the backbone for an efficient and effective public sector" and acknowledges the extent to which mind-set changes and behavioral shifts are needed to sustain profound transformations. UNDP has recently developed its Governance Portfolio around three main pillars: Pillar I – Effective, Accountable and Responsive Institutions; Pillar 2 – Civic Engagement and Empowerment; and Pillar 3 – Oversight, Human Rights and Rule of Law.Pillar 2 – Citizen Engagement and Empowerment focuses on enhancing the capacity of civil society to represent and advocate for the rights of Malawian citizens; supporting democratic processes through elections and parliamentary support; and improving social cohesion through conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Under Pillar 2, UN/DP has been been supporting the efforts of Malawian electoral stakeholders in strengthening the transparency and inclusiveness of their electoral processes since the country adopted a multi-party system in 1993. UN electoral support, in close partnership with national stakeholders and international partners, has included support to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) in developing its institutional and operational capacity, assisting civil society organizations (CSOs), providing support to electoral reform initiatives, promoting women's participation, and the mitigation of election related violence. To improve social cohesion through conflict prevention and peacebuilding, UNDP supported development of the National Peace Act and establishment of gender-sensitive National Peace Architecture. Moreover, UNDP has been leading partners in strengthening technical competencies of the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission (MPUC) at national and district levels through the District Peace and Unity Commission (DPUC), improving the capacity of community peace infrastructure to monitor and mediate conflict through early warning systems to prevent escalation, and strengthening data collection and analysis of conflict drivers. Under Pillar 2, three projects are currently being implemented: The Malawi Electoral Support Project (MESP) 2023 – 2025 was developed in line with the recommendation of the 2021 Needs Assessment Mission (NAM) and endorsed by the UN Focal Point for Electoral Assistance. The MESP) was set up to target three priority areas, including:Priority Area 1 – Capacity: Strengthened capacity and preparedness of MEC, CMD and the MPS to effectively manage activities regarding the electoral processes in a credible manner through capacity-building and technical assistance.Priority Area 2 – Inclusion: Improved participation and representation of women, youth, the elderly, PWDs and albinos through activities intended to foster participation and ownership of the electoral processes. Priority Area 3 – Peace: Reduced tensions and disputes regarding the electoral process through the establishment or strengthening and of existing mechanisms contributing to conflict prevention and mitigation. There are two peacebuilding projects currently implemented under Pillar 2 jointly implemented with three other UN Agencies. The "Strengthening Malawi's Peace Infrastructure for Conflict Prevention and Sustaining Peace in Borderland District" funded by UN Peacebuilding Funded Project. The second project, titled "Border District and Community Based Conflict Prevention and Peace Building in Malawi" funded by the Government of Ireland through the SDG-Accelerated Funded mechanism. Both projects are complementary and are contributing to the building and strengthening of national and subnational infrastructures for peace and conflict prevention, strengthening institutional capacities to manage borders. UNDP does not tolerate sexual exploitation and abuse, any kind of harassment, including sexual harassment, and discrimination. All selected candidates will, therefore, undergo rigorous reference and background checks. UNDP's Strategic Plan 2022–2025 is grounded in UNDP's continued commitment to eradicating poverty, accompanying countries in their pathways towards the SDGs and working towards the Paris Agreement. It envisions bold goals, making a difference to millions of lives through Six Signature Solutions, namely: 1. Poverty and inequality; 2. Governance; 3. Resilience; 4. Environment; 5. Energy; and 6. Gender Equality. These six signature solutions are powered by digitalization, innovation, and development financing. The Renewed Strategic Offer in Africa by UNDP's Regional Bureau for Africa (RBA) is organized around six strategic impact areas, namely Structural economic transformation, Peace and security, Natural resource governance, Climate change mitigation and adaptation, Women and youth empowerment, and Affordable sustainable energy. These rely on six foundational enablers, namely 1) governance of things; 2) digital transformation; 3) sustainable/innovative financing; 4) strategic communication and partnerships; 5) South-South cooperation; and 6) development intelligence. Around the world access to technology has increased and the costs of starting and running a business have declined increasing the number of and the speed of growth of tech and tech-enabled start-ups across the world. Start-ups, distinguished from traditional micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), are defined as ventures that are innovation-based, tech enabled and scalable, with potential for high impact in terms of job creation and positive disruption of traditional ways of doing things. As the world transitions from the industrial age to the information age, start-ups are penetrating and reinventing every aspect of human activity. These range from government, finance, defence, media and culture, to communication, health and even education, agriculture, energy and fashion. Start-ups generate employment. Among the insights generated by a Kauffman Foundation study was the finding that start-ups were responsible for all net new jobs created in the United States between 1986 and 2014. In South Africa, the National Development Plan predicts that by 2030, 11 million new jobs will be generated by small businesses. Some of the companies that will drive the global economy by 2035 may not even exist today. Against this backdrop, a global start-up revolution has begun and UNDP seeks to support this sector's growth by enhancing the support ecosystem for innovative entrepreneurs.Africa in particular has witnessed a surge of interest in entrepreneurship over the past five years. Across the continent, there has been a proliferation of start-up hubs, incubators and accelerators, business-pitch competitions and other efforts as governments, donors and private actors have rightly focused on the entrepreneurship challenge. However, a pervasive challenge seems to be creating significant traction; and transitioning from idea or early start-up stage to scale-up. The stakes for Africa's emerging innovation economy are high. Africa is the world's youngest continent and home to half the world's mobile money users. It is also the most entrepreneurial continent. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, 22% of the population were engaged in their own businesses. Thus, Africa's youth start-ups have massive potential to transform livelihoods, create jobs, positively impact the environment and generate economic value. The spirit of innovation is alive and well in Africa, but in order for it to scale and create transformational movements, the necessary elements should be in place within a conducive ecosystem. These include seed and growth-phase financing, university research labs, service providers, corporate engagement and more. UNDP has launched several programmes in the recent years to support innovation entrepreneurship across the world, including its accelerator programme and the timbuktoo programme. The timbuktoo initiative in particular aims to directly advance the achievement of the SDGs through the results of its "technology for good" offer in Africa. Of particular relevance in this regard is the potential for supporting innovations at scale in fintech, agritech, health tech, climate and energy, waste, logistics, commerce, trade, smart cities, mobility, tourism, the creative industry, mine tech and education. Timbuktoo seeks to provide a platform to support innovators to 1) convert their ideas into prototypes and minimum viable products, and 2) convert these prototypes into business ventures opportunities. Timbuktoo is integrally aligned to the Strategic Plan 2022–2025 and its three major enablersdigitalization, innovation, and financing ( , and is a bold and ambitious programme set to impact the outcomes for youth tech and tech-enabled start-ups in Africa. As part of the global UNDP Sustainable Finance Hub (SFH), UNDP established the Africa Sustainable Finance Hub (ASFH) in 2019, which has been operating to support Sub-Saharan African countries through the implementation of various strategic interventions that seek solutions to assist governments and partners in addressing development financing gaps, and counter challenges threatening the achievement of sustainable development. In doing so, ASFH aims to strengthen the SDG financing ecosystems at regional and country levels to help unlock public and private capital to accelerate achievement of SDG targets and the AU Agenda 2063 across the African region. Accordingly, the ASFH engages different actors in the financing for sustainable development landscape and promotes an array of financial resources as guided by the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA), including innovative financing instruments such as carbon markets, to increase financing available to support the Africa region to recover from COVID-19 and build back better over the long-term. Position PurposeThe purpose of this role is to drive UNDP's efforts to support tech and tech enabled start-ups in Africa, leveraging the organisation's Strategic Plan and the Timbuktoo initiative. The role focuses on fostering innovation, scaling high-impact ventures, and strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem across Africa, with a particular emphasis on youth-led start-ups. This position will contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by advancing technology-based solutions in sectors such as fin-tech, agri-tech, health-tech, and climate action, while addressing key challenges in scaling early-stage ventures. The position will directly support innovative initiatives by African Startups and SMEs ventures through concerted acceleration programs and matching partnerships with various ecosystem players. Anchored in the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, the programme also prioritises durable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and community reintegration.PAPEC (Projet d'Appui au Processus Electoral et Centrafrique with focus on local elections): PAPEC is designed to support democratic governance by supporting the Government and the National Elections Authority (A.N.E) in the organisation of elections to ensure that they are transparent, fair and inclusive to ensure the representation of diverse communities. Fifteen months into the conflict, Sudan faces one of the fastest growing crises globally, with unprecedented humanitarian needs. According to the 2024 revised Sudan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP), approximately 25 million people require humanitarian assistance, including over 14 million children. The influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) into already fragile communities is increasing their vulnerabilities, putting pressure on scarce basic services and natural resources, and threatening community resilience. According to the International Organization for Migration's (IOM) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), more than 11 million people have been displaced internally, with 7.3 million displaced since April 2023. The UNDP/IFPRI assessment highlights an accelerating food insecurity crisis, with up to 59% of rural households facing moderate or severe food insecurity, disproportionately affecting female-headed households. The conflict has also led to the destruction of productive assets, agricultural land, and the disruption of markets and trade routes. Over 70% of respondents to a UNDP/IFPRI survey indicated they did not cultivate any land during the 2023 summer season. Urban and rural household incomes have been severely disrupted, and the cost of food and production inputs has soared, with staples such as sorghum, wheat, and millet becoming unaffordable for many. The devaluation of the currency has further exacerbated the situation, making it difficult for Sudan to import sufficient food stocks. The situation is critical, with significant unemployment challenges, particularly among youth and university graduates, and a striking 73% of people fleeing the war not gathering in camps but finding refuge within host communities, placing additional pressure on these communities and threatening social cohesion.
