External Affairs Officer - GF

Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, Kinshasa - World Bank Group

Description Do you want to build a career that is truly worthwhile? Working at the World Bank Group provides a unique opportunity for you to help our clients solve their greatest development challenges. The World Bank Group is one of the largest sources of funding and knowledge for developing countries; a unique global partnership of five institutions dedicated to ending extreme poverty and boosting prosperity on a livable planet. With 189 member countries and more than 120 offices worldwide, we work with public and private sector partners, investing in groundbreaking projects and using data, research, and technology to develop solutions to the most urgent global challenges. For more information, visit www.worldbank.org Eastern and Southern Africa (AFE) Region: The World Bank is a long-standing partner of Eastern and Southern Africa. It has an active portfolio of 361 operations totaling $76.3 billion covering key sectors in the region such as agriculture, trade and transport, digital, energy, education, health, water and sanitation - all to support job creation, gender equality, poverty reduction, and better lives.    DRC Context: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), about the size of Western Europe, is the largest country in Sub-Saharan Africa. DRC is endowed with exceptional natural resources, including minerals such as cobalt and copper, hydropower potential, significant arable land, immense biodiversity, and the world's second-largest rainforest.  Most people in DRC have not benefited from this wealth. A long history of conflict, political upheaval and instability, and authoritarian rule have led to a grave, ongoing humanitarian crisis. In addition, there has been forced displacement of populations. These features have not changed significantly since the end of the Congo Wars in 2003. DRC is among the five poorest nations in the world. In 2022, nearly 62% of Congolese, around 60 million people, lived on less than $2.15 a day. About one out of six people living in extreme poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa lives in DRC.  World Bank engagement in the DRC is guided by a Country Partnership Framework (CPF) that is reassessed and renewed on average every five to six years. The Democratic Republic of Congo CPF for 2022-2026 emphasizes human development, with a commitment to help DRC improve access to and quality of basic services such as education, health, and social protection. The CPF also has a strong emphasis on addressing drivers of fragility, conflict, and violence, as well as mitigating impacts from health crises and building resilience to shocks and climate change. Protecting DRC's rainforest by addressing drivers of deforestation and forest degradation is also at the forefront of the CPF, as forests represent a resource of basic necessity for a majority of the poorest people in DRC.    As of August 31, 2023, the World Bank portfolio in the DRC totaled $8.6 billion, with 23 national projects ($8.2 billion) and three regional projects ($452 million). Engagements span: economic management, governance, and private sector development; human capital (health, education, social protection); sustainable development (infrastructure and connectivity, agriculture and food security, access to electricity and water, urban development); women's empowerment, and prevention and response to gender-based violence. Support Services Coordinator - Nigeria

Switzerland, Vaud, Lausanne - Terre des hommes

Position Start Date: 16.06.2024 Type of contract: CDM Duration: 12 months Location: Maiduguri, Nigeria Status: Unaccompanied   Terre des hommes does not set closing date for this position. Recruitment is on-going until the position is filled   Tdh: Terre des hommes (Tdh), founded in 1960, is an independent, neutral and impartial Swiss organisation committed to bringing meaningful and lasting change to the lives of children and youth, especially to those most exposed to risks. To make a difference, we focus on the areas of maternal and child health, children and youth migration, and access to justice.   Context: Nigeria is a multicultural country with great disparities between the southern regions of the country, which had experienced and still experiences growth and development and the northern regions, seriously affected after 13 years of violent insurgency, leading to massive humanitarian needs for millions of people and provoking terrible socio-economic inequalities in the region for an important part of the population. In the northeast, especially in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY states), the conflict stemming from the insurgency of non-state armed groups (NSAGs) in continues as intensely as ever. The attacks and insecurity have displaced millions of people, devastated agricultural production and other livelihoods, cut off essential services, and caused a crisis of protection. In 2022, some 8.4 million people of the BAY states will need humanitarian aid. Of these, 2.2 million are internally displaced; 1.5 million are returnees who lack essential services and livelihoods; and 3.9 million are members of communities affected by their hosting of IDPs. About 730 000 people are located in areas inaccessible to international humanitarian actors. Although some retain or have developed a degree of coping mechanisms, most rely at least in part on humanitarian aid. Tdh has first been established in Abeokuta, in 2008, and implemented development programmes, such as Migration programs. Activities in the South of Nigeria have been closed in 2019. In order to respond to the Lake Chad Basin Crisis, Tdh has established a country office since mid-2017, in Maiduguri, Borno State. Tdh contributes to the crisis' response by providing child protection services, education in emergencies, wash and nutrition assistance to most vulnerable children and their families.
