Job description

OCHA, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, coordinates the global emergency response to save lives and protect people in humanitarian crises. With its partners, OCHA contributes to principled and effective humanitarian response through coordination, advocacy, policy, information management and humanitarian financing tools and services.

 

OCHA in Cameroon provides information management services to the humanitarian community to inform a rapid, effective and principled response. It gathers, shares and uses data and information, underpinning coordination, decision-making and advocacy.

 

Your role as Associate Public Information Officer:

You will support the Public Information Section by:

  • Producing information and communication material for external and internal target audiences
  • Drafting public statements, press releases, and op-eds
  • Tracking, researching and analysing communications
  • Gathering information from diverse sources and assessing news value and other potential impact
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of communications campaigns
  • Identifying key constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintain working relationships with the same
  • Promoting and implementing OCHA's campaigns and initiatives, such as the World Humanitarian Day (19 August) at the field level with local partners and media.

 

Part of the Swiss JPO Programme, this position is sponsored by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC.

Skills required

For the Swiss JPO programme:

  • Swiss nationality
  • Not older than 32 years at the date of the first round of interviews
  • Fluency in English and a second UN language
  • Master's degree
  • Strong interest in a longer-term career with the United Nations 

 

For this position:

  • 3 years of professional experience in journalism, media, communications, public information, editing, or related area required. Please be aware that 3 years' experience is a must for SDC and that OCHA counts relevant internships at 50%.
  • Experience in collecting, analyzing, evaluating and synthesizing information required
  • Excellent writing skills required
  • Knowledge of institutional mandates, policies, guidelines related to humanitarian affairs required
  • Good computer skills with generic tools as well as social media required
  • Fluency in English and French required
  • Humanitarian experience at country level (actual setting where a mission and/or project is being implemented) in emergency situations (complex emergency or natural disaster) desirable
