The Position:
Building on the on-going work of the UNFPA-led Campaign to End Fistula (http://www.endfistula.org), which is present in 55+ countries in Africa, Asia Pacific, Arab and Latin American/Caribbean Regions, the Technical Analyst, Obstetric Fistula (OF) supports in providing technical and operational assistance for obstetric fistula , a major maternal morbidity, and supports the work of UNFPA and its Maternal and Newborn Health Thematic Fund (MHTF) in this area, as part of a comprehensive approach to maternal and newborn health within Sexual & Reproductive Health & Reproductive Rights (SRH&RR).

The Technical Analyst, Obstetric Fistula is located in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Branch, Technical Division, and reports to the Technical Specialist, Obstetric Fistula/Coordinator of the Campaign to End Fistula.
Job Purpose
Building on the on-going work of the UNFPA-led Campaign to End Fistula (http://www.endfistula.org), which is present in 55+ countries in Africa, Asia Pacific, Arab and Latin American/Caribbean Regions, the Technical Analyst, Obstetric Fistula (OF) supports in providing technical and operational assistance for obstetric fistula , a major maternal morbidity, and supports the work of UNFPA and its Maternal and Newborn Health Thematic Fund (MHTF) in this area, as part of a comprehensive approach to maternal and newborn health within Sexual & Reproductive Health & Reproductive Rights (SRH&RR).
Main Tasks & Responsibilities
A. Assist in developing and providing program guidance in the area of Obstetric Fistula (OF):
- Assist in developing programme guidance and support to Country Office (CO) and Regional Office (RO) staff including Fistula Focal Points, Maternal and SRH Advisors, through analyzing lessons learned and strategies, and support timely dissemination of programme guidance;
- Assist in reviewing and quality assuring MHTF COs' and ROs' multi-year and annual workplans (AWPs), and in disbursement of MHTF funding to COs and ROs, and in monitoring and implementation of activities;
- Contribute to planning and developing training and capacity-building activities for CO and RO staff, to enhance fistula programs and policies in ROs & Cos including MHTF capacity building meetings and south-south cooperation.
- Support the Technical Specialist / Campaign Coordinator in reviewing and analyzing the evidence based programme results, and disseminating publications and guidelines on effective programming strategies, including translation into different UNFPA regional and country contexts and emergency settings by liaising with translation providers;
- Support the Technical Specialist / Campaign Coordinator in reviewing and analyzing the evidence based programme results and disseminating publications and guidelines on effective programming strategies, for the elimination of obstetric fistula/maternal mortality and morbidity reduction, including liaising with relevant vendors for translation into different UNFPA regional and country contexts and emergency settings;
- Gather programme updates and dissemination of quarterly updates emails to partners and UNFPA fistula focal points, as well as HQ/RO/CO key colleagues;
- Liaise with country programs to track progress on implementation of programme guidance, including the new global fistula guidance within national health plans and strategies.
B. Support the effective functioning of the global Secretariat and reinforce UNFPA's leadership of the Campaign to End Fistula (CEF), including the International Obstetric Fistula Working Group (IOFWG):
- Support coordination of the IOFWG as required, through organization of & participation in meetings and technical working groups; support to activities of the IOFWG, responding to technical requests, etc.;
- Contribute to the development of partnerships from different sectors by conducting research and analysis to identify potential donors, and supporting development of proposals and outreach to such donors;
- Support the revamping of the global Campaign to end fistula, ensure regular updates of UNFPA fistula focal points, prepare and regularly update donor and partner profiles as required
- Provide analytical input into the development of, a global roadmap to end fistula by 2030 and monitoring of implementation of the roadmap;
- Support the planning and facilitation of MHTF meeting with donors, and assist in development and delivery of fistula presentations to key audiences at meetings, conferences, UN and partner events, etc.;
- Contribute to planning, organizing, and providing analytical input to global, regional and country level events to mark the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula with UNFPA offices and CEF partners;
- Serve as UNFPA focal point for the global fistula mapping exercise, liaising with UNFPA CO's, RO's and external partners.
C. Report on and monitor fistula activities and achievements in the broader areas of maternal health and SRH and RR:
- Ensure timely production and analysis of required reports, including preparing performance-based and results-driven annual, and other reports on OF, as part of thematic fund reporting, documenting achievements, and making recommendations for follow-up actions;
- Provide analytical input and consolidate UNFPA CO reports to donors and other key reports as required, including the Obstetric Fistula chapter of the Maternal Health Thematic Fund annual report; the ED's Annual Report, and other UNFPA annual reports;
- Assist in the development of the Secretary General's biennial report on Fistula - Researching and analyzing inputs to inform progress to end fistula by 2030.
- Contribute to track work plan implementation and progress of fistula activities and to communicating feedback to ROs/COs;
- Participate in mid-year and year-end work plan reviews and help summarize lessons learned to improve MHTF performance.
D. Contribute to communication, knowledge sharing and knowledge generation on OF and SRH and RR:
- Actively seek out the identification of innovative approaches and new developments in the area of maternal health, particularly related to the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula;
- Maintain mechanisms for knowledge sharing, including assisting in the management of the News and Updates tab of the global Campaign to End Fistula website (www.endfistula.org) & Updates of the obstetric fistula tab of the UNFPA website (technical information sharing portal), contribute to development of fistula-related news and updates on the maternal and newborn community, organizing meetings on technical areas, facilitating interactions utilizing information technology and supporting countries to document their lessons learned
- Compile documents and communication for the Campaign to End Fistula, for the usage in newsletters, advocacy materials, etc., working closely with Global Campaign communications colleagues.
- Contribute strategic inputs to the analysis and synthesis of trends and research findings in Obstetric Fistula and Maternal Morbidities, to inform the development of MHTF annual report.
- Assist in identifying, analyzing and disseminating of best practices and lessons learned in Obstetric Fistula & maternal morbidities to inform improvements in UNFPA operations
- Assist the generation of communication, advocacy, and knowledge products within the scope of the fistula and maternal morbidities program and the broader maternal and newborn health agenda.
E. Additional responsibilities:
- Carry out other tasks as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
- Advanced university degree in Public Health or Social Science or related field
Knowledge and Experience:
- Two years of experience in the area of international development including public health, preferably sexual and reproductive health; knowledge and experience on
Obstetric fistula an asset;
- Excellent writing abilities, with strong analytical skills;
- Experience working in a developing country would be an asset;
- UNFPA/United Nations experience and familiarity desirable;
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and team skills; ability to participate effectively in a team-based, information sharing environment;
- Must be highly organized and possess initiative and sound judgment;
- Strong proficiency in English, with excellent writing skills, is required. Knowledge of French is an asset.
