Operations Intern

Terms of Reference Currently, some 108,000 asylum-seekers and refugees are hosted in Greece. Ιn 2023, over 48,700 people arrived to the country by sea or land. UNHCR provides expert advice to the State and evidence-based information that helps inform programmes and policies for asylum-seekers and refugees. Access to international protection, identifying durable solutions and support to vulnerable asylum-seekers and refugees, such as unaccompanied children and survivors of gender-based violence, are UNHCR's key priorities. UNHCR also works with national and local authorities, the private sector, civil society and refugee communities to advance inclusion, develop support networks and create employability and training opportunities for refugees. The Office retains a readiness to respond to emergencies and new arrivals, with a focus on immediate support to the most vulnerable. UNHCR Greece plays a strong advocacy role since continued support is needed particularly from EU countries and EU institutions in providing immediate protection to those most at-risk through sufficient resources, ensuring capacity in the country and responsibility-sharing. UNHCR will continue to assist Greek authorities in responding to both short and long-term challenges. Duties and Responsibilities The intern in Operations Unit, Lesvos, reports to the Assistant Operations Officer and supports the unit with interagency coordination, external relations, and integration activities with the following tasks: • Take minutes of the Inter-Agency Coordination Meeting and the Integration Working Group, maintain mailing lists and send invitations for coordination meetings; • Assist in consolidation of data for preparation of periodic reports such as statistics' snapshots, and for background briefings to media; • Prepare briefing kits for visitors; • Monitor local media (including online, print and social media) and report on major developments; • Assist with the implementation of awareness-raising activities during International Days; • Provide administrative and flow management support during employability activities (e.g. job fairs); • Provide administrative support in routine services and activities within the Unit.  Minimum qualifications required  • Fluency in English • Good drafting skills • Computer skills (MS Office)   Other information Duration is 3 months. Interns who don't receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help cover the cost of food, local transportation & living expenses. UNDP is the knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development in the UN Development System and serves as the integrator for collective action to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP's policy work, carried out at Headquarters, Regional and Country Office levels, forms a contiguous spectrum of deep local knowledge to cutting-edge global perspectives and advocacy. In this context, UNDP invests in the Global Policy Network (GPN), a network of field-based and global technical expertise across a wide range of knowledge domains and in support of the signature solutions and organizational capabilities envisioned in the Strategic Plan. Within the GPN, the Crisis Bureau (CB) guides UNDP's corporate crisis-related strategies and vision for crisis prevention, response, and recovery.   Framed by UNDP's Strategic Plan 2022 - 2025, UNDP's work on human mobility aims to address the drivers of migration and forced displacement, enhance the resilience of people on the move and communities, and expand the benefits of human mobility on sustainable development. We particularly aim at promoting inclusive and gender-responsive development solutions for forcibly displaced people, migrants and their communities of origin, transit, and destination for a positive impact of human mobility, especially in fragility and crisis contexts.   In line with the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) and the SG Action Agenda on Internal Displacement (AAID), the programmatic and policy advisory support, led by the Recovery Solutions and Human Mobility Team (RSHM) in the Crisis Bureau (CB).   Against this background, UNDP is looking for human mobility experts to support its work on migration and forced displacement.   SCOPE OF WORK, RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED WORK 1. Migration and development - At the global level, support the RSHM team in its engagement within the UN Network on Migration (UNNM), the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) and the Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development (KNOMAD). - At the regional and country levels, support UNDP's regional hubs and country offices in strengthening the organization's positioning in the area of migration and development, as well as designing and implementing initiatives aimed, among others, at addressing the adverse drivers of irregular migration and forced displacement, harnessing the positive contribution of remittances and diasporas in countries of origin, or still promoting the socio-economic integration of immigrants and returnees, as well as social cohesion in communities of destination and return. - Contribute to developing knowledge products and capacity-building tools that help UNDP strengthen the positive interaction between migration and development.   2. Solutions to forced displacement - At the global level, support the RSHM team in implementing the recommendations of the AAID and UNDP's pledges to the Global Refugee Forum (GRF) 2023, as well as UNDP's institutional strategy on development solutions to internal displacement. - At the regional and country levels, support UNDP's regional hubs and country offices in implementing the organization's development approach to forced displacement and providing solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, asylum seekers, returnees, and communities. - Contribute to developing knowledge products and capacity-building tools that help UNDP strengthen its work on prevention of and solutions to forced displacement.   3. Socio-economic integration/reintegration and social cohesion - Support UNDP in helping national and local governments design and implement integration/reintegration strategies and policies. - Support UNDP in implementing, monitoring, and evaluating social cohesion initiatives in different human mobility contexts. - Contribute to developing knowledge products and capacity-building tools that help UNDP strengthen its work on socio-economic integration/reintegration and social cohesion. - Strengthen mechanisms to address the effects of climate change and environmental degradation on migration and investing in nature-based solutions to increasingly make migrants and communities the agents of mitigation and adaptation.   4. Climate change, environment, and human mobility - Contribute to strengthening the linkages between UNDP's work on human mobility, environment, and climate change, including the Climate Promise, adaption, and climate financing. - Help UNDP develop guidelines and training material on how to incorporate human mobility into climate change initiatives (including reference to loss and damage). - Support regional hubs and/or country offices in mainstreaming human mobility, environment, and climate change into their regional, national, or local programming. - Support UNDP positioning in relevant climate change, environment and human mobility external policy and inter-agency policy processes including through drafting key messages.   5. Gender - Support UNDP in promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women on the move by helping design gender-related targets, tools, and interventions, and how to achieve these. - Help identify general and country-specific barriers that may prevent women on the move from participating equally in initiatives offered by UNDP, and more broadly in accessing social services and economic opportunities in their environment, such as gender-based violence and lack of care arrangements. - Contribute to developing knowledge products and capacity-building tools to help UNDP integrate better gender into its work on human mobility.   DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: At UNDP, we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment of mutual respect. Swisscontact cherche une Coordinatrice/-teur pour le programme PERSPECTIVES (80%) implémenté en Suisse et en Tunisie.   Le programme PERSPECTIVES est financé par deux structures étatiques suisses : la Direction du Développement et de la Coopération (DDC) et le Secrétariat d'État aux Migrations (SEM). Le programme mobilise d'une part la diaspora tunisienne dans le but de partager ses connaissances, son expertise et son savoir-faire, d'investir des moyens financiers et de soutenir le développement économique, social et culturel en Tunisie. D'autre part PERSPECTIVES travaille avec les jeunes diplômés et professionnels tunisiens / tunisiennes pour leur permettre de vivre une expérience professionnelle en Suisse et soutient leur retour en Tunisie. La première phase du programme durera encore deux ans et demi et deux phases supplémentaires sont prévues.    Lieu de travail :  Flexible, soit en Tunisie (Tunis) ou en Suisse (Romandie) avec une disponibilité de voyager pendant 20 à 30% du temps de travail dans et entre les deux pays.  Durée du contrat : A partir de juin/juillet 2024 (ou à convenir), 2 ans pour démarrer avec option de renouvellements.   Responsabilités et tâches : La Coordinatrice, le Coordinateur est sensé gérer une équipe multidisciplinaire et multiculturelle en Tunisie et en Suisse, mobiliser le secteur privé en Suisse pour offrir une expérience professionnelle aux jeunes tunisiens et tunisiennes, encourager la diaspora tunisienne en Suisse, en France (et ailleurs) d'investir en Tunisie, représenter le projet envers les partenaires comme le SEM et la DDC, mais également envers les autorités tunisiennes partenaires et les bénéficiaires : les jeunes tunisiens et tunisiennes et la diaspora tunisienne. La Coordinatrice, le coordinateur remplacera la coordinatrice actuelle et sera placé sous la supervision du directeur régional MENA et le directeur pays de Swisscontact en Tunisie.
